Prime Minister asks homeowners to take care of their maids

Prime Minister Hun Sen on Wednesday called on all homeowners to well treat maids working at their houses by allowing them enough break time as garment workers did.

Speaking to about 20,000 garment workers in Kampong Speu province’s Chbar Mon city, Mr Hun Sen said on Wednesday that all house owners should understand the plights faced by the maids and help solve their difficulties.

“I want to tell those who have maids that you have to take care of your maids and solve the problems for them. Because they are poor, they come to work for you,” he said.

“You have to understand that garment workers have break time and days off, but the maids who work in someone’s houses do not have break time or days off during public holidays or weekends,” he said.

The primer added that all house owners should be nice to their maids because they were spending more time on their chores than the garment workers.

“I want to appeal to all homeowners who afford to hire maids, please take care of them,” Mr Hun Sen said.

Yim Sothy, president of Association of Domestic Workers (ADW), expressed her satisfaction to hear that the government paid more attention to domestic workers.

Ms Sothy said that she hoped that working conditions for about 250,000 domestic workers will be improved and that they will receive decent wage and benefit as garment workers do.
